Faculty & Staff - Resident Assistants
Hannah LaPrise – Head Resident Assistant
This is Hannah LaPrise's third year as an RA at GSSE, and her second year as one of the two head RAs. She happily attends UTK, and will be a "super" senior this fall. Hannah, regrettably, is not well versed in the realms of math, sciences, and engineering. However, she does study global studies (her major), political science, religious studies (her major) linguistics, and dinosaurs. And food. When she isn't doing homework, Hannah likes reading, cooking, swimming, and watching movies with friends. She is super excited for Governor's School to start!
Desta Bume, Resident Assistant
Desta was born in 1991 and grew up on a farm in the small village of Wotera in Southern Ethiopia. After completing the 8th grade in his home village, he went to high school in Hawassa, the capital city of the Southern State of Ethiopia. When he was a Junior in high school, Desta had an opportunity to go to Signal Mountain High School in Chattanooga as an exchange student through the Cherokee Gives Back Education Program, being one of 21 students selected from Ethiopian high schools to participate in the program. He co-founded a Non-governmental Organization (NGO) in Ethiopia that supports high school students from poor families by offering tutorial classes, collaborates with other local and International NGOs to empower women, creates job opportunities for youth, and creates awareness about HIV/AIDS in rural Ethiopia. The organization also works with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to protect environmental degradation by planting trees. In addition, with his former host school and family, he raises money to build water wells, classrooms, and buy books for schools in his home village through “Walk for Wotera” and “Water for Wotera” events.
Desta is a senior, double majoring in Chemistry and BCMB. Also, he is one of fifteen 2010 Haslam Scholars. Last year, Desta worked as a teaching assistant in Biology and, this year, he is taking on a double role as an RA and TA. He is looking forward to working with students during five weeks of Governor School. Desta enjoys biking, running, playing soccer, and volleyball.
