Dr. Christopher Pynes, Course Director
I grew up in southern California and attended the University of California, Santa Barbara and San Diego State University for B.A. and M.A. degrees respectively, both in Philosophy. I then moved to Tallahassee, Florida to do more graduate work in Philosophy at Florida State University where I earned a Ph.D. in 2003. I then spent two years teaching a variety of classes here at the University of Tennessee: Philosophy of Science, Formal Logic, Ethical Theory, and Business Ethics.
The last four years I have spent at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois with my wife, Darlene, stepdaughter, Blake, and way too many pets. I teach logic (formal and informal), environmental ethics, and philosophy of science and mind to name a few. This is my fifth year teaching for the Governor's School for the Sciences, and I am looking forward to another stellar performance from all the PUGs. Nick Langston, Teaching Assistant
Nick Langston obtained his B.A. in philosophy with a minor in religious studies at Western Illinois University in 2008. He graduated with honors and was designated the Departmental Scholar. He also served as president of the Student Philosophical Association and remains a student member of the American Philosophical Association. When he is not reading or generally taking it easy, Nick enjoys studying jazz theory, mountain biking, rock climbing, camping, or spelunking. He is always open for an adventure, especially if it involves going to a Cubs game or figuring out a way to build a light saber. Nick plans to pursue graduate work in philosophy and the history of science this coming year. He will always, however, be looking for something to laugh about, especially himself.
Woods Nash, Teaching Assistant
Woods is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at UT. He has also completed a Master's degree in Public Health. He has taught bioethics and business ethics. He works part-time with Bridge Refugee Services, a non-profit agency that works with the federal government to resettle refugees in East Tennessee.
